Dress code and media etiquette

The electronic media is bombard with multiple channels raising demand for News Anchors and Show Hosts. There being no proper training institute to groom Anchors and hosts, the channels appoint youngsters barely meeting the minimum criteria of the job. Consequently, the TV is reined by young girls and guys who come to pass time and mint money. No one bothers to educate them about the sensitivity of their job. They are the Ambassadors of Pakistan and mentors of Pakistanis, but still they have a long way to qualify to be one. From their dressing to demeanour, everything carries a message for the viewers whereas all these amateurs are too casual with their job.

Adding to the misery is the absence of a dress code and broadcast etiquette. Most of the Show Hosts wear improper clothing making us feel that they have been attacked by a kettle of vultures on their way to the show. They come clad in glittering dresses not less than that of brides' and grooms'. Most of them are seen excessively painted in colors in the name of makeup. Apart from that TV anchors and hosts prefer wearing western dresses and speak English probably to impress the poor uneducated Pakistanis.

Sadly, the channels that run round the clock have no vision. Most of the channels and programmes are the replica of the other and is equally insipid and uninspiring. The Anchors and Hosts use cheap tactics to compensate for the missing talent. They behave oddly, totally ignoring the cultural and religious norms. They shout and scream to make the show going at the cost of our eardrums. They crack cheap jokes and use smutty double entendre that one can’t help cursing themselves for watching the programme. Our image, being portrayed by the TV channels is at least not of a cultured nation.

Before the emergence of private channels, there was an apex of professionalism in Pakistan TV. The news anchors, drama artists, show hosts, working for Pakistan TV were dignified and praise worthy. They were the paragons of decency and high professionalism; their language, posture and dressing had an elegance and grace. Each and every program at that time had lead over the other. Those patriots spent their whole life earning good name for Pakistan. In those days, our neighbouring country used to call their TV a baby as compared to PTV. They trained their stars by emulating PTV dramas and Pakistani legends performances.

It is high time the TV channels realize the significance of their role and work for strengthening the fabric of our society. Instead of fighting to get good ratings, they should  display  sense of responsibility. The TV personalities should take their job as an opportunity and challenge to influence people in a positive and constructive way for everyone's good. There must be an explicit code of conduct and dress to be observed by all TV channels for the larger benefit of our society because the influence of the electronic medial on the masses is undeniably monumental.
